Hilt and Helm Fencing Pittsburgh Fencing Club!

Chris Shelton. Club Owner and President

“You can’t think about your personal problems when someone’s trying to stab you in the face!”

Where are we?

We are located at Ace Axe Throwing

145 E 8th Ave

Homestead, PA 15120

Go in, go to the back, take the elevator to the 5th floor and we’ll be right there! If you’re not sure, just ask the bar tender where are the sword fighters.

What the heck are you guys doing?

We are a HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) club which studies manuals from fencing masters published between the 1300’s and 1600’s to learn how the swordsmanship was taught and practiced during the periods in which it was most in use. Then equipped with modern HEMA gear and specialized steel weapons designed to allow us to safely practice at full speed and intensity, we proceed to stab each other! Below is a video of one of our fights.

When are we open?

Wednesday Night from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm

On Wednesdays, we have Knight School from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm and free sparing from 7:30 pm until 8:30 pm. All new students are encouraged to enroll in Knight School on our class pass page. Normally class is $20 a session ($30 if you do not have your own gear), but Knight School enrollment gives you 2 months of all you can fence access on Wednesdays/Saturdays and gear rental for $160 and a free t-shirt when you complete the course!

Saturday Afternoon from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

On Saturdays we have free spar, special events such as our potlucks or Pillowfecht, and guest instructors from other schools come out to give lectures.

The following weapons systems are available to be taught on Wednesday class.

  • Beginner Longsword

  • Advanced Longsword

  • Single Rapier

  • Rapier and Cape

  • Rapier and Dagger

  • Sword and Buckler

  • Saber

  • Katana

  • Side Sword

  • Messer

  • Dagger

How much does it cost?

There is a $20 floor fee every time you come. If you have your own equipment you are free to try out any of the weapons we have available; however, if you require equipment we rent it out for an additional $10.

For students who would like to come as much as the want, we offer a monthly pass. For $89.99 you can fence all you want on Wednesdays and Saturdays AND the equipment rental fee is included.

Knight School Enrollment occurs 6 times a year and is our beginner course for new students. For $160, students can fence on Wednesdays and Saturdays as much as they like with no equipment rental fees. When they’ve finished the last class, they get a free t-shirt and can pay $80 a month to keep up the unlimited access.

I’m totally new. Do I need to bring anything?

Please read our Safety Requirements Page for the following information:

  1. What equipment you should bring.

  2. What equipment we provide.

  3. What are the requirements for being able to free spar.

The short version is that you need to bring workout clothes including shorts, t-shirt, sneakers, groin protection, and a water bottle. All other equipment that is required will be provided for an additional $5. New students don’t have to take classes before jumping into free sparring, but they do need to demonstrate basic fencing equipment proficiency, etiquette, and safety behavior by completing The Challenge of the Jarl!”.

Once you’re through all that, we have a beginner class called “Knight School” from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Wednesdays, then free spar / whatever you’d like me to teach you from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. For only a $10 rental fee we have gear for you to use and train with, but all students are encouraged to eventually purchase their own gear.

Do you accept kids?

Children as young as 16 are welcome to train with us. Any younger than that and they will need to be accompanied by a parent or responsible guardian during practice. We have foam swords and pillows available for younger students to train with, but would prefer that only children aged 16 and up partake in actual sparing.

Try a session for free and see if it’s right for you.

For your first time, visitors are welcome to sit in and spectate a class for free. Afterwards I’ll answer any questions you have about classes, equipment, and fighting.
