Who the hell are these people?

  • Chris Shelton. Jarl of Hiltenhelm

    Chris Shelton (He/Him)

    Jarl of Hiltenhelm (President/Co-founder)

    Master of Coin (Treasurer)

    Master of Webs (Website Manager)

    Master of Ceremonies (Event Coordinator)

The Jarl serves the club as the head instructor, voice of the club, club visionary, and scape goat in case something goes wrong. Although he makes the decisions and has the power to dictate the direction and actions of the club, he is not without oversight. The small council composed of the club founders and a select few officers oversees the actions of the Jarl. If he behaves in a manner unbefitting the spirit in which the club was founded, he can be deposed by unanimous consent among the small council. In that event, a new Jarl will be selected from the existing officers.

The Master of Coin monitors the incoming revenue generated by the club, club expenditures, and ensures that any new prospective expenditures will not jeopardize the club’s ability to honor its debts and maintain its equipment.

The Master of Webs Maintains the website and the youtube channel.

The Master of Ceremonies coordinates the events the club either hosts or co-hosts.

  • Julia Holfelder: Hand of the Jarl

    Julia Holfelder (She/Her)

Hand of the Jarl (Vice President)

    Second Thane of Hiltenhelm

Julia was our very first Knight School graduate, went to compete in their first ever fencing tournament: Blue Box Open. She even managed to win fights in both Longsword and saber after only a few months of training with us. That combined with her perfect attendance record earned them the title of “Second Thane of Hiltenhelm”

When Sheradon could no longer commit to running class on Saturdays, Julia stepped up and agreed to open up class for free sparring if I couldn’t be there. For this selfless act of generosity we have promoted them to “Warden of Week’s End” and officially recognize them as an officer of the club!

Since her last promotion she has demonstrated the values we look for in upper club management. It was her idea to put our code of conduct on our website, she came up with a better method of taking attendance, and has been an irreplaceable sounding board for ideas related to guiding the club’s direction. If I can’t be present, I have every faith that she can hold things down on her own. For these reasons Julia has been promoted to Hand of the Jarl!

  • Nick Bulan. Master of Lessons

    Nick Bulan (He/They)

    Master of Lessons (Full Instructor)

    Master of Staff (Staff Manager)

Nick was actually my (Chris Shelton’s) original Saber and Sword and Buckler teacher! He has graciously agreed to help us by teaching one Saturday a month to give me the freedom to play hookie every once in a while. He also is our staff manager and helps to make sure our club improvement initiatives are getting worked on.

  • Pete May. Master of Coals

    Pete May (He/Him)

    Master of Coals (Small Councilor)

    Earl of Levertine

    First Thane of Hiltenhelm

Pete was awarded his titles due to exemplary service to the club for his donations of back of the head protection, foam swords, and his home for FunFecht 2022 (our first sponsored event). The timing and immensity of his actions have had an indelible mark on our organization. As thanks, he has been granted a seat on the small council which oversees the direction of the club leadership.

  • Auren Butler

    Auren Butler (She/Her)

    Quarter Master (Gear Maintenance Chief)

Auren’s sterling attendance record, desire to help the club, and general handiness have earned her the position of Quarter Master. She is in charge of maintaining our arms and armor.

  • Robin Steele

    Robin Steele (She/They)

    Master of Facilities (Facility Manager)

Due to Robin’s sterling attendance record and desire to help the club, she has been given the position of Master of Facilities. Robin’s duties include collecting dues from students at the start of class, ensuring new students have signed the waiver, helping new students get geared up, ensuring the gear returns to the storage area after class, and general club maintenance.

  • Paul Wintruba

    Paul Wintruba (He/Him)

Master of Whispers (Photographer and Social Media expert)

Paul had been taking classes with us for a while. At one point after class I overheard Julia asking if he could take some head shots of her. During the conversation it was revealed that he wasn’t just a photographer, he was the owner of Scrimshaw Media! After taking a quick look at his website we hatched a plan to replace all of the crappy iPhone 8 photos I’ve been polluting the website with and officially create a club Instagram! So as better looking photos start trickling onto the internet feel free to shoot a thank you to our friendly neighborhood master of whispers!

  • Benjamin Oor (He/Him)

    Benjamin Oor (He/Him)

Novice of Lesson (Beginner Longsword Instructor)

Ben has been a passionate fencer for most of his life! When he was 10 he began learning modern sport fencing, and throughout his career as an Epeeist through high school and college, found community in a number of clubs around the United States (including Corsair!) and competed in countless tournaments. In college he found himself in a bit of a rut with modern fencing, so he decided to switch it up and try historical fencing, beginning with an SCA Rapier club. Ben ultimately found his way home with the German Longsword at Hilt and Helm. His experience as a sport fencer has given him an edge in the transition to HEMA, and he has joined Hilt and Helm to work through the fundamentals of the German Longsword in the Beginner Longsword classes on Wednesdays!

Chris Shelton - Jarl of Hiltenhelm

Chris Looking Cool as Hell!

Jarl Chris Shelton of Hiltenhelm looking cool as hell with (what scientists would call) a dope ass katana!

Chris Shelton has been doing Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) since 2014. He has “mastered” (if that’s what you want to call it) German Longsword, Saber, Rapier, Sword and Buckler. Recipient of 8 medals and numerous awards including 2018 Clash of Claymores Hema Fashionista, he infuses the teachings of several sword masters including Johannes Liechtenauer, Fiore dei Liberi, and Joachim Meyer with his own eccentric flair to produce a sword fighting style that is most certainly “one of a kind”.

What People Are Saying

Fencing is very cathartic! You can’t think about your personal problems when someone is trying to stab you in the face

— Arnold S. A guy Chris stabbed in the face.

I won’t pass my sword SAT’s any time soon. Or get into a good sword college. Or get a good sword job with a sword 401k and sword benefits… but I’m having loads of fun!

— Kenny G.

Watch out for his hand strikes. The guy is like a textile mill from the 1920’s.

— Justin C.

Everything he does is just wrong! My mentors have warned me for years about doing the most of the things he does. And yet somehow when he does them they always seem to work against me.

— Victoria G.
